Biographical Sketches

Robert A. Frank, Ph.D., is Associate Vice President for Research and Associate University Dean for Advanced Studies at the University of Cincinnati. He is also Professor of Psychology at the University of Cincinnati. Both his masters and doctoral degrees were earned in psychology at the University of Cincinnati, where he took a position as Assistant Professor of Psychology in 1982. Dr. Frank has garnered federal and industry research funding in two distinct areas; animal research on the psychopharmacology of brain reward mechanisms and human research on the psychophysics of taste and odor perception. His present interests include development of a clinical test of olfactory ability and individual differences in food preferences. Dr. Frank has authored over 150 publications and professional presentations in the areas of behavioral neuroscience and human taste and smell perception. He has served as a reviewer and panel chair for the National Science Foundation, National Institute for Mental Health, and National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders.

Bob Gesteland has investigated the sense of smell for the past 50 years. He retired several years ago from the University of Cincinnati, where he was Professor of Neurobiology and Associate Dean for Research in the College of Medicine, Vice President for Research and Dean of the Graduate School of the University. He was Professor of Biomedical Engineering and of Biological Sciences at Northwestern University, Evanston, from 1965 to 1985. He was an engineer at General Radio Company in Cambridge, MA and an engineer and section head at Scientific Engineering Institute in Waltham, MA prior to his Northwestern service. His Ph.D. is from M.I.T. in Neurobiology and his B.S. is in Electrical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin. He has authored more than 160 publications and professional presentations, has been principal investigator on 22 research grants and consulted for 27 industrial and research organizations.
